Delivering earthquake-resilient structures: how we can do so much better.

Between 2011 and 2016, a series of devastating earthquakes in New Zealand highlighted that there is no room for complacency on the part of designers, contractors, government departments and asset owners when it comes to delivering resilient infrastructure that stands up to Mother Nature. Referencing these real-life events, this talk demonstrates the need for total transparency and accountability within a project team to avoid potentially disastrous consequences for multiple stakeholders.

About Will Lomax

Will Lomax is a structural engineer with over thirty years’ global experience. He is the Founder of Onguard Seismic Systems, Inc and owns a New Zealand structural engineering firm. He has witnessed numerous devastating earthquakes first-hand and his experiences have led him to pioneer new, low-damage approaches to the seismic design of buildings and storage tanks. His experiences highlighted many deficiencies in the design and certification of structures, and the non-collaborative, laissez-faire approaches taken by many designers, engineers, contractors, owners and local jurisdictions that aren’t supported by a robust system of compliance and accountability. Over the course of a number of earthquakes these deficiencies have impacted Will and his teams both personally and professionally. Will was born in the UK and lived in New Zealand for twenty years. He is now based in California, focused on better equipping the USA’s liquid storage industries to withstand impending earthquakes.
