Why We Dropped 'Natural': The Story Behind the Disasters Expo Rebrand
)
The Disasters Expo debuted in Miami at the Miami Beach Convention Center on March 10-11, 2021. Initially named "The Natural Disasters Expo," the event underwent a name change at the suggestion of the United Nations.
The United Nations asserts that the term "natural disaster" is misleading. A natural threat, such as a hurricane, earthquake, or flood, becomes a disaster only when it impacts a community that is inadequately protected and has a susceptible population due to issues like poverty, marginalization, or social inequality.
Natural hazards can lead to catastrophic events, such as wildfires or desertification, which severely impact natural resources, destroying ecosystems and wildlife habitats. Additionally, some disasters stem from human-induced hazards, including chemical spills or nuclear leaks. The resulting devastation can profoundly affect the communities that depend on these resources, leading to significant economic and cultural losses, as well as devastating lives and livelihoods. However, it is important to note that these incidents do not fall under the category of natural disasters.
The decision to rebrand to ‘The Disasters Expo’ has been beneficial to our aim as an event of Disaster preparation, response and recovery and has led our event to become the largest emergency management conference in the world by a far margin.
We will be celebrating our 5th anniversary of the Disaster Conference Series in Miami on 4th and 5th March 2026.
Thanks to our team and the help of the United Nations we have led the industry to our goal of building the global hub of emergency management and disaster response
